Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.     The Greeley Fire Department is seeking qualified applicants to establish an eligibility list for the position of full-time Firefighter/Paramedic.

    The City of Greeley Fire Department provides an ‘All Hazards’ emergency response for a population of over 115,000 citizens and covers a response area of 64 square miles. The Department responds to over 18,000 emergency calls from seven fire stations and is comprised of 133 personnel. The Department provides Advanced Life Support Service at the Paramedic level and partners with an ambulance contractor who provides transport services.

    Firefighter/Paramedics perform individually and/or as a member of a team and participate in activities in the following areas:  combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; responding to emergency medical and traffic accident calls and other related public assistance activities; performing routine custodial maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • 21 years of age at time of application deadline.
    • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).
    • Valid FireTEAM test score.
    • Possession of valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Greeley’s driving records policy. State of Colorado license required by hire date.
    • Possess and maintain a current State of Colorado and/or National Registry Paramedic Certification.
    • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
    • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider card.
    • Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification at time of application and upon a Conditional Job Offer.
    • Must be able to pass a comprehensive pre-employment background check, criminal history, motor vehicle record review, and drug screen utilizing the following criteria:
      1. No felony convictions or conviction involving moral turpitude.
      2. No felonious drug usage or related activities within the previous 5 years.
      3. No use of marijuana within the last two years.

    • Operates, or is a passenger in, an emergency vehicle responding to fire, accident, or medical emergency scenes.
    • Awkward and cramped positions to perform tasks normally associated with this position.
    • Responds to fire, accident, or medical emergency scenes at any time during work schedule.
    • Works in adverse conditions (i.e. weather, around fuels, oils, cleaning fluids and fumes, extreme heat and cold, etc.).
    • Provides specialized training to Department members if qualified.
    • Maintains physical fitness according to Department standards.
    • Presents safety and informational presentations to the public.
    • Operates computers for record keeping, documentation, and communication.

    Working Environment & Physical Requirements:

    • Required to work either a 48-hour shift work schedule (48 on / 96 off) or an 8-hour day / 40-hour week schedule.
    • Required to participate in public safety education and fire prevention activities.
    • Required to respond to fire, accident, medical, or other emergency scenes at any time during 48-hour schedule.
    • Inability to leave work site/scene during 48-hour shift.
    • Works with the public in situations involving severe physical and personal trauma.
    • May be exposed to toxic gases.
    • May be exposed to hazards which create potential for personal injury.
    • May be exposed to seasonal weather conditions.
    • Operates, or is a passenger in, an emergency vehicle responding to fire, accident, or medical emergency scenes.
    • Required to wear safety equipment as stipulated by departmental standard operating procedures.
    • Vision sufficient to perform functions such as read and review written communications to obtain on-scene information regarding fire, accident, or medical emergency, to render appropriate assistance.
    • Hearing and speech enough to communicate clearly and distinctly face-to-face as well as over the radio in normal and adverse conditions.
    • Arm and hand steadiness and manual dexterity to use firefighting, extrication, and basic life support tools.
    • Stamina enough to remain physically active during a fire, accident, or medical emergency scene until relieved.
    • Stamina and strength enough to move heavy objects (50 lbs. or more) long distances (over 20 feet)
    • Ability to distinguish possible types of fires by color of smoke or flame.
    • Ability to effectively perform job duties at varying heights or in confined spaces under adverse conditions.

    • Week of May 28th-31 – in person interviews and skills assessments ( June 4th if needed) 
    • June 10-12th - Chief Interviews 
    • June 17th- conditional job offers via email. 
    • June 18th- pre-employment testing (backgrounds/DMV)
    • Week of June 24th – in person medical evaluations and fitness/wellness assessments. 
    • July 8th, 2024- final job offer. 
    • July 31st, 2024- Official hire date.
    • August 20th- Tentative recruit fire academy starts.

    • Step Three: Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)Candidates must possess a current CPAT card at the time of application and must maintain a current card through the Conditional Job Offer process.

    • Step Four: Interviews & Skills Assessment:  Candidates who meet the minimum requirements and who successfully pass the written exam may be invited to participate in the Skills Assessment and Interview process.

    NOTE:   Preference points will be awarded to testing scores for Military Veterans who provide proper documentation, such as a DD Form 214. Five (5) preference points will be added to the overall score of those qualified candidates who pass each section of the written exam.

    Preference points will be awarded to the scores for fluency in a second language. Four (4) preference points for fluency or two (2) preference points for partial fluency will be added to the overall score of candidates that demonstrate proficiency during a scheduled skills evaluation.      

    Post Conditional Job Offer – Pre-Hiring Minimum Requirements:

    • Must be able pass the medical evaluation by the department Physician (NFPA 1582 Standard).
    • Current CPAT certification upon application and must be maintained through the Conditional Job Offer process.
    • Pass the Greeley Fire Department Annual fitness/wellness assessment.
    • Pass the designated psychological screening process.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, using tact and diplomacy.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.

    Candidates must provide copies of pre-hire minimum requirements prior to final job offer. 

    Employment:

    • Those who are placed on the eligibility list will remain on the list for twelve (12) months. The eligibility list may be extended for an additional twelve (12) month period at the request of the Fire Chief and approval by the Civil Service Commission.
    • Those selected for employment will be paid to attend the current recruit fire academy. 

    Post-hiring Requirements:

    • Successful completion of the current Recruit Firefighter Academy; and,
    • Must be certified as a Fire Fighter II by the State of Colorado within 12 months of hire, maintain that certification; and,
    • Must be certified at Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations within 12 months of hire, maintain that certification; and
    • Possess or obtain and maintain State of Colorado Paramedic certification; and,
    • Must successfully complete the Medical Director approved program to practice as a Paramedic for Greeley Fire Department immediately upon completion of the post-academy training process.
