Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Position Summary:
Responds to calls for emergency medical services and provides patient care as directed and/or determined
necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Safely navigates ambulance to patient's location. Provides stabilization of scene and requests additional
assistance as necessary.
Determines nature and extent of illness or injury and patient's history from available sources. Administers
emergency medical care within scope of practice, including patient stabilization, monitoring, and resuscitation,
from the scene to receiving medical facility.
Contacts medical personnel, reports/records observations, and follows directives from supervising Physician
or Registered Nurse.
Maintains equipment, restocks supplies and cleans ambulance as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Education
Successfully completed MDHHS approved Paramedic course
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be
able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Licenses:
Paramedic license
Valid Michigan driver's license
Certifications:
Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (Preferred)
Trauma Course (ITLS or PHTLS) (Preferred)
Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) (Preferred)
Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator (CEVO), VFIS Driver Training, or equivalent (preferred)
Minimum Work Experience
6 months field experience in EMS (Preferred)
