Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. As an Paramedic in the Emergency Department, you will be responsible for the direct and indirect care of patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). You will assist the RN in plan of care to meet patient/family needs.
What you will do in this role:
· You will provide care to the critically-ill patient by assisting the nurse in obtaining and documenting vital signs, IV access, specimen labeling and collection, accurate monitor tracings, Accucheck readings, and/or assist in codes.
· You will communicate with patient/family/visitors in a calm and courteous manner and provide them assistance as needed.
· You will answer patient call lights and relay information to the primary nurse as indicated.
· You will assist patients with basic care such as toileting, feeding and hygiene, as needed.
· You will be responsible for stocking, splinting and bandaging.
· You will assist the Registered Nurse in transport of unmonitored and monitored patients to diagnostic procedures, to Surgical Services or to any other area of need throughout the hospital.
· You will help with cleaning the department such as stretchers and IV poles, etc.
· You will stock supplies as needed.
What qualifications you will need:
· You must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
· You must have a CNA, EMT, Paramedic, or Corpsman license in the state which you practice.
· A current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider is required.
· At least 6 months in a patient care setting is strongly preferred.
