Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.     Emergency Room: 

    At Parkwest Medical Center we strive to provide outstanding patient care during emergency situations. Our 39-bed Emergency Department provides care to patients experiencing medical emergencies, acute illnesses, and minor trauma. Staff works in a fast-paced environment to quickly assess conditions and stabilize patients in life-threatening emergencies such as stroke, cardiac events, severe injuries, as well as less urgent medical issues. The Emergency Department evaluates approximately 140 patients per day.

     

    Our staff members include RNs, Paramedics, LPNs, ED Techs, and Health Unit Coordinators. Our department is high energy, and team-oriented, and customer satisfaction is a high priority.  We currently use a self-scheduling module that covers a six-week period. Staff work three 12-hour shifts per week with an every other weekend rotation and two Mondays per month. Our night shift nursing staff enjoy extra weekends off as we employ traditional night weekend Baylor RN staff.

    Position Summary: 

    Provide patient care as assigned, under the direction of a registered nurse (RN) or a physician.

    Responsibilities

    • Practices in compliance with regulatory standards and adheres to hospital policy and procedures in the performance of duties.
    • Performs ongoing patient observations per patient acuity.
    • Recognizes, responds and reports changes in patient condition to RN.
    • Recognizes need for interventions and implements appropriate processes to meet patients age specific needs while under the direction of an RN
    • Performs, prioritizes and documents patient care tasks with education and competency documented. Refer to Covenant Health Delegation Grid.
    • Accurately follows the plan of care and pertinent medical orders in collaboration and under direction of RN.
    • Facilitates timely physician evaluation and intervention.
    • Participates in unit specific quality assurance activities as requested.
    • Demonstrates principles of infection control; collaborates with infection control nurse to ensure safety of patients, visitors, and personnel.
    • Assists in orienting new employees or students to unit routines.
    • Demonstrates competence in performing critical skills to include appropriate delivery of care according to the age-specific needs of the population served.
    • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education:              

    None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

     

    Minimum Experience:         

    One (1) year of continuous experience as an EMT-P.

     

    Licensure Requirements:    

    Must have and maintain paramedic licensure with the State of Tennessee.  CPR required.
