Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.   • This is the fourth level in the Health Services series.  
     
    This position is for night-time coverage of the inmate population at Calcasieu Corrections and Calcasieu Sheriff’s prison.   Incumbent will be assigned to rotating 12-hour night shifts with primary area of duty in intake and other areas as needed.  This is an independent roll requiring someone who is a self-starter, able to follow protocols/procedures, and able to make, communicate, and complete assessments on a variety of medical patients.  Works directly with security personnel to ensure safe competent care of inmates from intake to discharge.  (The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.   Other duties may be assigned.)
    • Provides pre-booking and post-booking assessments, support, and care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility or booked into system while maintaining thorough patient care documentation.
    • Obtains information from inmates, performs exams, and determines nature, extent, or magnitude of illness or injury to establish emergency medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
    • Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to arrange for reception of inmates at medical treatment facilities.
    • Administers prescribed first-aid treatment onsite according to established medical protocols.
    • Applies splints; administers oxygen or artificial resuscitation; treats and bandages wounds or abrasions; and performs other basic life support procedures.
    • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    This position does not require supervisory responsibilities of lower-level employees.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 
    High School Diploma or equivalent (GED), and two years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

    LICENSING REQUIREMENTS 
    • Valid Driver’s License as per State law or requirement.
    • State Paramedic Certification; or
    • National Registry Paramedic Certification
    • AHA Basic Life Support Certification
    • AHA Advanced Life Support Certification

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Starting I.V.s and administering I.V. fluids and/or medications under supervision of Medical Director or Nurse Practitioner.

    Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.   If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
     
    Incumbents may be subjected to blood and other bodily fluids.
