Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Requirements
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and completion of emergency medical technician paramedic coursework;
or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Physical Requirements
Ability to exert physical effort in light to strenuous work, which may involve some standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects and materials, crawling, stooping, squatting, digging, or bending.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid license as a credentialed Paramedic in the state of residence and must be eligible for reciprocity from the State of Alabama Division of Emergency Medical Services, if not licensed by this agency.
Must possess current Board Certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.
Must obtain certification as a Firefighter in the State of Alabama within one year of employment. Must pass a Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) within 12 months prior to Firefighter training and pass the NFPA 1582 physical examination prior to employment.
