Park Naturalist plans, develops, and conducts programs to inform the public of historical, natural, and scientific features concerning national, state, or local parks. May require a bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Park Naturalist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.     Qualifications:

    Candidates must possess the following characteristics and skills to succeed:

    • Ability and willingness to lead captivating and informative discussions about natural history
    • Strong leadership qualities in various scenarios, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, guest friendliness, and a clean, neat appearance, including appropriate attire and personal grooming.
    • Experience traveling on marine waters, including camping and kayaking.
    • Valid driver's license, clean record with no moving violations in the previous three years.
    • Capability to lift 75 lbs overhead and maintain physical fitness.
    • Basic first aid and current CPR certification.
    • Possession of a tent, suitable outdoor attire, and additional necessities.
    • Before being hired as a kayak guide, applicants must pass examinations for basic guiding abilities, area natural history knowledge, navigation, unassisted re-entry of a capsized kayak, assisting others in re-entry, towing kayaks, emergency procedures, and other qualifications. Testing will be practical, verbal, and written, and they are required prerequisites before beginning work as a guide. Applicants lacking the necessary abilities can take advantage of our free Sea Quest Guide Training Program.
    • The comprehensive beginner's course lasts 10 days and is scheduled for May and June. Participants have the option of participating in select aspects of the course based on their ability level. Students pursuing degrees can apply for internships, while those with less experience can apply for apprenticeships.

    Duties: Assist with all aspects of field operations, including guiding sea kayak tours

    Engage guests in discussions about Puget Sound's natural history, marine environment, flora and wildlife, conservation challenges, and other topics

    Teach guests the fundamentals of sea kayaking and water safety, help with entering/exiting and moving kayaks, follow all safety rules, prepare meals and equipment, perform routine maintenance, etc.

    The summer program runs from mid-May to mid-October. Some positions may begin in late June and/or end between late August and early September.

Also, include a cover letter and a list of employer references. If you are physically fit and a competent educator/marine naturalist, we can quickly train you to be a safe and strong kayak guide. However, acquiring natural history information takes significantly longer, so applicants should be familiar with it or spend many months researching before arriving for training.     Salary: $17-22.00 per day depending on skills and prior experience.
