Park Naturalist plans, develops, and conducts programs to inform the public of historical, natural, and scientific features concerning national, state, or local parks. May require a bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Park Naturalist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.     BASIC FUNCTION

         Performs routine park enforcement of park rules and regulations, intense public contact through unaccompanied foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle patrol of parks to assure security and protection of public property, public safety and the natural environment. Coordinate and supervise seasonal laborers and volunteers and provide routine maintenance of grounds facilities.

    STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 
    1. Performs law enforcement duties such as issuing citations for park violations, investigations of illegal dumping on park properties, checking on reports of timber theft and patrolling assigned park areas for public safety and compliance of day-use parking and camping fees. Also follows up on failure to pay notices and issues citations as warranted by code.
    2. Cleans, sanitizes restrooms, replenishes towels, toilet tissue, soap and other supplies; empties waste baskets; collects and disposes of garbage and litter; cleans picnic shelters; clears trails and sweeps, rakes and picks up trash from grounds; cleans fire rings and fireplaces.
    3. Mows, edges, trims, irrigates and fertilizes lawns; weeds plant­ing beds; irrigates and fertilizes and maintains a variety of flowers, plants, shrubs and trees.
    4. Inspects park grounds, play equipment, ball fields and facilities; corrects or reports unsafe or unsanitary conditions.
    5. Makes minor repairs to picnic tables, benches, garbage receptacles, play structures and other structures.
    6. Operates trucks, tractors, power mowers, chain saws, weedeaters, and other small power equipment; may provide minor equipment re­pair.
    7. Answers questions and provides information on the county park system to park users; opens and closes park gates.
    8. Renders First Aid, CPR, or other emergency assistance as necessary.
    9. Maintains required records and prepares routine reports.
    10. Installs and maintains signs. 
    STATEMENT OF OTHER JOB DUTIES 
    1. May serve as lead worker and supervises the work of others.
    2. May prepare and present nature interpretation and environmental education programs or other informational programs.
    3. May paint various structures and equipment; may participate in the repair and construction of park facilities and grounds improvements such as trails, picnic areas, day use areas, swimming areas, playgrounds and campgrounds.
    4. May collect campground, reservation, day use and other fees.
    5. Performs related duties as required.
         One (1) year of park ranger experience with Federal, State or local government OR any equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Must be a lawful permanent resident or United States Citizen: minimum 21 years of age. Must pass job related tests. 
     
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

         Must successfully complete the Skagit Valley Community College Park Law Enforcement Academy: or approved equivalent prior to commissioning.
         Employees are required to possess a Special Commission with the Snohomish County Sheriff's office or other approved commissioning agent that restricts law enforcement issues as they pertain to Snohomish County Parks & Recreation, within one (1) year of employment.
         A valid State of Washington Driver's License is required for employment. Unrestricted except as to vision, is required prior to appointment.
         Possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid Card/CPR card within ninety (90) days of employment is required.
         Must pass pre-employment examinations which may include, but not limited to, a complete background investigation, fingerprinting, criminal record check, polygraph examination, a medical examination and a psychological evaluation.
    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

    • understand and follow oral and written instructions
    • work independently on assigned tasks
    • think and act quickly in emergency situations
    • write clear and accurate reports
    PHYSICAL EFFORT
         The work involves a variety of routine manual labor tasks re­quiring some strenuous physical effort such as lifting objects weighing in excess of fifty (50) pounds.
     
    SUPERVISION
         Employees in this class report to a Senior Park Ranger or Ranger Supervisor. The employee performs the work with considerable independence. Work may be spot checked for compliance with standard procedures and general instructions.
     
    WORKING CONDITIONS
         The work is performed primarily outdoors in all types of weather. Employees will work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
