    Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

    As a seasonal Park Ranger, your duties will include:

    • Serving as an initial contact for park visitors.
    • Conducting regular, frequent patrols of recreation areas by vehicle, boat, bicycle or on foot to ensure public safety and to monitor visitor compliance and resource impacts.
    • Working in the park visitor center and entrance station(s).
    • Assisting park visitors and answering questions about available recreational activities, park facilities and resources, and other related topics.
    • Performing light grounds maintenance duties such as collecting rubbish and/or emptying containers.
    • Administering first aid and other emergency assistance based on certification level and experience.
    • Assisting higher-graded park rangers and other staff members with special projects based on education, skills, program needs, and interests.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    • Occasional travel may be required.
    • Must possess or obtain certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and blood-borne pathogens.
    • You will be required to drive over long distances (up to 200 miles on some days) on winding and sometimes unpaved or 4-wheel drive terrain roads.
    • You will be required to participate in emergency search and rescue operations. Park rangers must be able to swim and pass a basic water safety/rescue course. Work involves performing duties on water vessels, in water, or near wetlands on a regular basis. Park rangers must be able to perform search and rescue services and participate in water rescue operations.
    • You may be required to work under extreme physical stress for long periods of time such as during emergency operations or when doing field work in remote locations.
    • You may be placed in situations requiring crowd control and/or evacuation procedures.

    Qualifications

    In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the education and/or specialized experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume.

    To qualify at the GS-05 level: You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service, which includes: 1) Conducting patrols to check conditions at various park and recreation areas; 2) Drafting reports, maps, and/or other related documents for higher level review; 3) Explaining rules and regulations to park visitors or providing information on park activities and resources. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the Federal service (GS-04). WORK EXPERIENCE THAT ONLY INCLUDES LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED AS QUALIFYING SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE.

    Examples of qualifying experience may include (but are not limited to) the following: Experience working as a park guide or tour leader; assisting in geological or historical preservation project initiatives; assisting in the execution of wildland fire protection programs within the boundaries of a national, state, and/or local park or conservation area; ensuring regulatory compliance in the conservation of natural resources and/or the safety of park visitors. These examples are not all inclusive.

    A four-year course study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work with a major of study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

An official transcript must be sent directly from the University's Registrar's office and must be provided from the institution awarding the degree.     Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED:

    Approximately 75% of the work is performed in a land and water outdoor environment. The work requires the operation of vehicles, cycling over hilly paved roads; arduous walking in steep, uneven terrain; carrying heavy objects for short distances; using a variety of ground tools such as shovels, picks, and rakes; exposure to biting insects (including ticks), venomous snakes, skin irritating plants (including poison oak), dust, and cold and extreme heat (i.e., extreme temperatures ranging from below 20 degrees in winter to over 110 degrees in summer).
    You will be required to work more than 8 hours per day, shift work, on-call, weekends and holidays.
