Additionally, Patent Attorney requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Patent Attorney work is closely managed. Specifically, we are presently seeking motivated independent Patent Analysts to work with us as independent contractors in support of a contract with the USPTO for performing reclassification of patent documents according to the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) system. As new technologies emerge, the classification approach used by patent examiners and patent practitioners worldwide needs to adjust to accommodate these new innovations. This is an opportunity to leverage your technical background to assist the USPTO’s efforts to keep the system effective for everyone.     As an independent contractor working with GPS on the CPC Reclassification contract, you will be responsible for recommending how existing patent documents within your specific technology domain need to be reclassified to accommodate changes to the classification system that are warranted by ongoing innovation.     Contractor Responsibilities:

    • CPC Reclassification: Contractors will be required to perform the following:
      • Gain an understanding of the specific CPC classes that are changing or being eliminated.
      • Review the documents that need reclassifying.
      • Identify the new class(es) the documents should be classified in.

     

    • Quality: For GPS, quality is at the pinnacle of the work we perform. Contractors GPS works with must share in our belief and commitment of providing the highest quality of work.
    • Timeliness: Contractors will work closely with GPS Management on a weekly and/or monthly basis to provide their capacity and turnaround-time for the work to ensure the work is completed in accordance with GPS internal deadlines. Meeting agreed upon deadlines will be vital to success.
    • Continuous Improvement: Contractor must use self-guided means of staying up to date with changes to the CPC system by reviewing resources provided to the Contractor from GPS and/or other publicly available data.

    Experience and Skills:

    Technical Requirements:

     

    Contractors must have strong technical backgrounds; either professional experience or technical education in one of the following technical categories:

    • Biomedical Engineering/Medical Device
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Biotechnology
    • Electrical Communications
    • Computer Science
    • Physics
    • Chemical Engineering

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree or PHD in a field of science and/or engineering.

     

    • Must be a U.S. citizen or reside in the U.S for the most recent two years as a work-eligible legal resident.

     

    • Ideally, Contractor will have 1-3 years of previous Patent Classification, Patent Searching, Patent Examining and/or PCT Written Opinion experience.

     

    • Strong ability at quickly grasping inventive concepts and correcting/efficiently classifying documents.

     

    • Excellent time management skills to properly plan and complete all work on-time.

     

    • Contractor should be very detailed-oriented and possess excellent communication skills.
