    There is one Part -Time Attorney III or IV (Appellate Attorney) opening with the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office. The Prosecuting Attorney is seeking a motivated candidate with a solid legal education and demonstrated record of achievement. The individual selected will be of the highest ethical character, accountable, an outstanding communicator, and have thorough knowledge of the laws of the state of Washington. The experienced part-time Appellate Attorney will serve under the direction of the Elected Prosecutor.

    The vacant position is a part time (75%) position working 30 hours per week.

    **Temporary Hiring Incentive of $12,000 ($6,000 upon acceptance and $6,000 after six months of employment) from February 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025**

    Essential Duties:

    Will respond to appeals for felony convictions and personal restraint petitions (PRP’s) filed by convicted felons.

    Will serve as a resource for trial attorneys on legal issues in cases both at the time of charging and throughout the entire prosecution.

    Will assist in the evaluation of strengths and weaknesses during trial phase and assist staff with developing sound jury instructions.

    May also participate in and/or prepare and present training programs and education programs to staff attorneys, law enforcement, and community or civic organizations, and will provide ongoing training related to changes in the law.

    Education and Experience:

    Juris Doctorate from an accredited law program recognized by the United States, Admission to the Washington State Bar, AND Admission to practice in the Supreme Court of Washington; AND a minimum of 8 years (Attorney III) or 12 years (Attorney IV) of law practice.

    Required:

    • Admission to the Washington State Bar and be a member in good standing;
    • Ability to complete and maintain all continuing legal education requirements as mandated by the Washington State Bar Association;
    • Admission to practice in the Supreme Court of Washington;
    • Valid WA State Driver’s License and proof of insurance, if requested; and,
    • Successful completion of a comprehensive criminal background investigation and general employment verification, which includes fingerprinting.

    Preferred:

    • Appellate experience

    Equipment Used: computer, associated department and standard operating software programs, fax, scanner, copier, multi-line telephone, multi-media equipment, other basic office equipment, passenger vehicle.

    Working Conditions: This position is rated as Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
