Clinical Pathology Assistant or Associate Professor

    The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) at the Utah State University College of Veterinary Medicine (USU CVM) seeks a faculty member in Clinical Pathology. The tenure-track ranks of assistant professor or associate professor, and the non-tenure track ranks of professional practice assistant or professional practice associate professor will be considered, depending on preference, qualifications, and experience of the successful applicant. The assignment for this position includes 55% teaching, 40% Extension (clinical diagnostic service), and 5% service. The clinical diagnostic service role is provided through the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL). The UVDL is a cooperative effort by USU and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food and is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). Evaluation of candidates will begin February 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. This is a fiscal year (12-month) appointment with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024, or sooner.

    Responsibilities

    Position Responsibilities for Teaching (Primary Role 55%):

    • Contribute to the design, development, and delivery of veterinary medical instruction in the DVM degree curriculum including: providing lecture and laboratory instruction in clinical pathology to veterinary students; provide instruction in other veterinary courses commensurate with their background, expertise and needs of the program; assist with veterinary student club activities; and contribute to the training of veterinary pathology residents and graduate students.
    • Develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students’ veterinary medical competence and mastery.
    • Contribute to developing the DVM degree curriculum and other curriculum activities associated with their expertise.

    Position Responsibilities for Extension - Clinical Diagnostic Service at the UVDL (40%):

    • Perform the duties of your veterinary diagnostic laboratory specialty by serving as an on-duty veterinary medical diagnostician throughout the year.
    • Provide medical interpretations of data generated by laboratory technicians in your section and summarize cases wherein laboratory data is generated from more than one section.
    • Document laboratory medical findings by photographic and written reports.
    • Communicate, both orally and in writing, laboratory findings to submitting veterinarians, animal owners, public health officials, and regulatory personnel.
    • Provide clinical pathology support to researchers.
    • Demonstrate scholarship in veterinary laboratory diagnostic medicine by publishing case reports, reviews, etc. in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Participate significantly in maintaining laboratory accreditation.
    • Additional duties that support the overall mission of the UVDL.

    Position Responsibilities for Service (5%):

    • Contribute to the department, college, university, and profession through service (e.g., serve on graduate student, curriculum, hiring, and admissions committees).

     

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • DVM or equivalent degree.
    • Board certification (or eligibility) in clinical pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), or European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP) Board Certification. For board-eligible individuals, time will be allowed for board preparation.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative setting.
    • Strong English language written and communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Evidence of excellent teaching performance in a professional veterinary curriculum and / or graduate student academic environment.

    Additional Qualification for Rank of Associate Professor

    • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students, veterinary students and/or clinical residents; and demonstrated record of scholarly activity in the area of diagnostic clinical pathology.
    • Demonstrated ability to publish refereed scientific and/or pedagogical research.

    Currently, the USU CVM participates in a “2 2” program with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University and the broader Washington – Idaho – Montana – Utah (WIMU) Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine that provides instruction to 30 students in each class cohort. However, in 2022 the State of Utah approved the establishment of a full 4-year DVM degree program at USU with the goal of admitting its inaugural class of 40 students in the fall of 2025 and supporting a class size of 80 veterinary students in subsequent years. This position offers multiple opportunities for professional development in instruction, curriculum design, and innovative teaching methods.
