Pathology Assistant under the supervision of a pathologist assists with preparing and dissecting surgical specimens. Prepares and selects tissue samples for analysis. Being a Pathology Assistant may record findings or sterilize equipment. Requires a bachelor's/master's degree from an accredited program. Additionally, Pathology Assistant may require certification as a pathologist assistant. Typically reports to a pathologist. To be a Pathology Assistant typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Assist Pathologist in surgical pathology, frozen sections and autopsies.
Work without immediate supervision when performing professional duties associated with
the preparation, performance and completion of examination and/or preparations of surgical
pathology specimens.
Qualified to perform high complexity testing per CLIA-88 regulations.
Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from a NAACLS accredited institution.
Baccalaureate degree in biology (or biological sciences) preferred.
Completion of a NAACLS accredited pathologists' asst. program preferred.
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or eligible preferred.
