Patient Accounts Representative organizes inpatient and outpatient claims for electronic or hard copy mail and forwards to appropriate third party payers. Reviews claims to make sure that payer specific billing requirements are met, follows-up on billing, determines and applies appropriate adjustments, answers inquiries, and updates accounts as necessary. Being a Patient Accounts Representative requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Patient Accounts Representative works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     The Patient Account Representative is responsible for billing and collections of all HIPAA compliant claims to insurance companies for payment of all patient related charges and following up on accounts within 30 days. This position is also responsible for secondary billing, processing refunds, requesting allowances, recommending accounts for bad debt, write offs and referring accounts to self-pay for patient pay amounts. Other responsibilities include verification of benefits, filing, excel spreadsheets, interacting with patients when financial counseling is needed, and some travel may be involved for trainings.

    Qualifications

    High School diploma or equivalent. One to three years of experience with psychiatric inpatient electronic billing systems and paper insurance billing claims follow-up preferred.
