Being a Patient Registrar, Sr. contacts insurance providers to verify coverage and obtain authorization for service. May review claims or records to ensure accurate completion or coding in an effort to reduce reimbursement denials. Additionally, Patient Registrar, Sr. requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. To be a Patient Registrar, Sr. typically requires 1-3 years of related experience. May be entry level if some experience in the skill.     Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

    Job Role Summary

    The Registrar often serves as the first contact patients have with the system. The Registrar adapts activities/behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate service appropriate to the age of the patients served (i.e. neonatal, infant, pediatric, preschool, school-age and adolescent, and adult and geriatric). This role also performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations in the clinic/hospital/office setting.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities

    • Register and check-in patients validating demographic information
    • Collect pre-pays and co-pays
    • Reconcile the cash bag daily
    • Check-in patients and load insurance in the correct priority for billing
    • Identify the network patient belongs to and enter correct plan code
    • Match, file and retrieve from an alphabetical and numerical system
    • Establish priorities and meet deadlines, follow written and verbal instructions
    • Scan or copy the insurance cards and photo ID
    • Direct patients to financial counselors when no payer identified and/or patient has outstanding balance
    • Inform patient and/or family of the patient obligation policy
    • Determine if reason for visit is work related
    • Accountability for accuracy of data collected and entered into systems
    • Electronically verify patient's insurance eligibility and benefits via Kramer
    • Utilize Kramer system to verify address given by patient
    • Utilize Kramer RQi to perform essential job functions

    Job Requirements

    Minimum of one (1) year of experience in business, office management or health information management. High school diploma or equivalent (GED) plus post-secondary education courses; or certifications in business, computers, or office management. Associate's degree; preferred

    • Must pass pre-employment screening test
    • Must complete outpatient registration program and pass the exam with a score of 90% or higher
    • Must pass annual competency exams as required
    • Must maintain 95% accuracy on registration data audits

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Working knowledge of insurance and third party payers, patient billing and account processes
    • Knowledge of and ability to use CRT, PC, registration system, Windows, and Internet Explorer
    • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of personal computers and standard office equipment
    • Must demonstrate a positive demeanor, excellent customer service skills, and good oral/written communication skills with the ability to use age appropriate communications and be professional in both appearance and approach
    • Must be detail oriented, possess basic mathematical skills, and have analytical skills to resolve registration issues as they relate to multiple groups including third party payers, physicians, patients and the system
    • Knowledge of third party payers and modifiers
    • Exceptional patient interviewing skills
