Patient Safety Manager manages a staff responsible for developing and implementing patient safety programs. Supervises the investigation of errors and then plans for resolution of all safety related incidents, including those involving employees, visitors, patients, and situations posing a threat to the hospital's buildings and equipment. Being a Patient Safety Manager maintains records of patient-related errors and evaluates this information in order to identify the cause of the error. Collects, reviews, and analyzes information from the facility's safety programs to identify corrective action and programs as necessary. Additionally, Patient Safety Manager recommends changes, policies, or programs that could prevent future errors. Designs and presents training programs meant to increase awareness of patient safety initiatives. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. POSITION SUMMARY:
Develops and implements business and strategic plans that support patient safety initiatives, as well as the internal and public reporting of those initiatives. Partners closely with nursing colleagues to foster a culture of shared learning and coaching. Stays current on industry best practices related to patient safety and suggests improvements to current processes. Investigates adverse patient events and sees investigation through until Action Plans are completed. Conducts proactive risk assessments of high risk processes/ service lines. Provides an annual Safety Report to the Board. Acts as chapter owner of the patient safety related regulatory requirements. Conducts safety culture surveys and assists management in creating action plans to address gaps in safety culture. Serves as liaison for Health System for Culture of Safety issues. Provides direct reporting and oversight of safety staff ensuring all operational and productivity needs are met. Serves as back up to the Director of Quality Safety and Accreditation and handles other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Bachelor’s degree in Health Care or Nursing required. Master’s degree in Health Care or Nursing preferred. At least five years of progressive management experience in a related area.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Registered Nurse with current licensure in Illinois. Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) credential required within the first year of employment. Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) preferred.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Successful completion of annual job specific competencies and skill verification required. Knowledge of patient safety methods and techniques is essential. Process improvement methods, quality management skills and accrediting and regulatory organization procedures strongly preferred. Ability to effectively interact, build consensus, mediate differences and facilitate change among all levels of staff within the organization and community required. Excellent computer, organizational, critical-thinking and conflict resolution skills required. Demonstrated leadership skills essential to the position.
