Additionally, Patient Safety Specialist tests patient-safety knowledge of employees and recommends changes to training programs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Patient Safety Specialist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.     This position is responsible for providing support services for clients surrounding activities of daily living. Throughout the day work includes monitoring client activity, interacting with clients, and documenting client activity. This position assists with maintaining a therapeutic, safe environment utilizing the Robert Young Center guiding principles of trauma informed care.

    Responsibilities:
    Maintaining and Monitoring of Building
    • Cleaning building, completing laundry, stocking supplies, and preparing food for clients
    • Respond to calls and provide front desk coverage
    • Completes safety rounding to maintain therapeutic, secure, and safe environment for patients/visitors/staff including enforcement of rules.
    • Accurately documents safety rounds.
    • Intervenes appropriately and therapeutically in crisis situations using crisis intervention preventions and trauma informed care.
    Client Care
    • Demonstrate competence in recognizing and responding to patients physical, mental, emotional and developmental needs utilizing crisis prevention intervention and trauma informed care
    • Demonstrates the ability to display compassion, empathy, and calmness in all interactions, including stressful interactions with clients/families/visitors/co-workers.
    • Maintains a professional attitude and personal behavior which enhances the efficacy of the therapeutic environment through courteous interactions with all, showing compassion for the client and family, and ensure client privacy
    Technical/Administrative
    • Complete admit & reentry process including admission paperwork and check in of client belongings
    • Complete urine screens
    • Document in paper & electronic logs & charts
    • Participate in shift change responsibilities.
    Qualifications:
    Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:

    • Knowledge of proper food handling and preparation.
    • Mental health or substance disorder experience preferred.

    License(s)/Certification(s):

    • Possession of a valid Class “D” Iowa driver’s license or an equivalent license from the employee’s state of residence.
    • CPR
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention) training, initial & yearly renewal

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    • Must have thorough knowledge of proper food handling and preparation
    • Must have thorough knowledge of the federal drug and alcohol confidentiality law (42 C.F.R. Part 2) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
    • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing in English.
    • Must be able to deal effectively with mentally ill and/or substance abuse clients and a multi-disciplinary team of professional staff.
    • Must have the ability to work in a situation with a high degree of physical and emotional strain.
