Additionally, Patient Safety Specialist tests patient-safety knowledge of employees and recommends changes to training programs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Patient Safety Specialist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.   • Job Description/Summary:
    Under the direction of the Patient Safety Manager, the Patient Safety Specialist will participate in the promotion of a culture of quality and safety throughout the organization.  The Patient Safety Specialist is committed to continuously improving patient safety and reducing healthcare errors.  The position supports ongoing education and compliance with The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals and other regulatory and accreditation requirements.   

    The position will support the Patient Safety Program in accordance with the organization’s Patient Safety Program Plan.    
    The position works closely with the BCH Oakland Director of Patient Safety, the BCH Executive Director Quality and Safety, and the Medical Director of Clinical Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Officer to provide ongoing support for the development, implementation and sustainment of the organization’s Quality and Safety strategic plan.      

    Position Requirements:
    Minimum Education:
    Bachelor’s degree, in a healthcare related field. Master's degree preferred
    Minimum Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years Clinical hospital experience. Experience in hospital Patient Safety required. Experience working in an organization/community with a diverse patient population, workforce and Medical Staff.
    Certification Required: Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) preferred
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
    •    Knowledge of functional medical terminology
    •    Knowledge of hospital applications, as appropriate, for data entry, report/document development, and report generation.
    •    Complies with HIPAA regulations for all protected health information.  Maintains confidentiality in all settings and adheres to the Corporate Compliance and Ethics program.
    •    Knowledge and/or familiarity with regulatory requirements such as The Joint Commission Standards, CMS, CDPH regulations, state and federal regulatory agency requirements standards and regulations.  Willingness to seek additional education in this area if needed. 
    •    Familiarity of performance improvement methodologies to include team-building, intense analysis techniques, and gap analysis strategies preferred.  Willingness to seek additional education in this area if needed. 
    •    Strong team player and capacity to effectively lead interdisciplinary teams and work groups.
    •    Some knowledge of project management techniques.
    •    Ability and willingness to adapt to changing priorities and aggressive project deadlines.
    •    Effective organizational and time management skills
    •    Ability to maintain standards of performance under changing conditions
    •    Ability to schedule and prioritize for self and/or others, to handle multiple activities and to meet deadlines.
    •    Ability to analyze and interpret patient safety and quality improvement data.
    •    Understanding of and appreciation for the culture and environment associated with managing clinical risk in a complex medical center operating in a rapidly growing, highly competitive environment. 
    •    Ability to work with clinical, administrative and support staff to minimize clinical risk while supporting them in reaching their clinical, financial and service objectives.
    •    Strong commitment to the Quality and Safety vision and goals as well as the overall mission of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals.
    Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.  Willingness to seek additional education in this area if needed.
