Patient Safety Specialist assists in the development and implementation of patient safety programs. Gathers data detailing patient-related errors and conducts analysis for management detailing the cause of the error. Being a Patient Safety Specialist recommends changes, policies, or programs that could prevent future errors. Gives presentations and training programs meant to increase awareness of patient safety initiatives. Additionally, Patient Safety Specialist tests patient-safety knowledge of employees and recommends changes to training programs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Patient Safety Specialist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Qualifications:
1. Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and two (2) years of clinical and/or administrative experience in coordinating and monitoring initiatives, activities, and programs related to patient safety, quality improvement, and related area(s), analyzing, managing, and reporting patient safety data and performing other functions related to patient safety in a hospital or health care setting; or
2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Public or Hospital Administration or a related discipline and five (5) years of experience, as described in “1” above; or
3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience.
