Assists Nursing staff with patient care and other related activities by providing for personal comfort
and rehabilitative needs of patients and by performing other services necessary for overall unit operation. Provides direct care to patients 15 days and older. Performs a variety of technical tasks and bedside functions. Responsibilities include direct patient care, hygiene, skin care, mobility, monitoring and performing EKGs. Expected to manage equipment and perform or assist with procedures on the unit. Observes all health and safety requirements. This description covers the essential functions of the position.
1) Participates and demonstrates competency in patient care activities for all age groups under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists RN staff in providing care to patients including observing and reporting the patient's condition.
2) Utilizes computer applications appropriately for patient care documentation
3) Establishes and maintains relationships that reflect Service Excellence standards with patients, families, significant others and other members of health care team
Adapts to change in a cooperative, mature manner.
4) Functions as a member of the team
Participates in orientation of other PCTs under RN or Nurse Manager's direction
Provides constructive feedback to new PCTs on their performance.
5) Functions independently within PCT role and established departmental standards and goals. Demonstrates accountability for own continued development within the role of the Patient Care Technician
6) Participates on BMLH committees
Acts as a leader within the department and on committees
7) Conducts patient safety rounds routinely
8) Carries out following procedures after receiving proper training: unsterile warm soaks, compresses, colostomy care, external catheter care, unsterile dry and wet dressings (may not do if skin is broken), non-medicated lotions and creams, fleet enemas, SSE anti-embolism stockings, application of telemetry/ cardiac monitor, insertion and removal of foley catheter and obtain urine sample, point of care, restraint application, phlebotomy if requested by management
9) Willingly floats to other Nursing units, as requested
10) Offers suggestions to improve the system for delivery of nursing care when appropriate
1) Certification as Nurse Aide and/or completion of documented Nurse Aide, Home Health Aide or Patient Care Technician Training Program or a nursing student with two clinical rotations
2) 3-5 years of Nurse Aide performance in hospital setting preferred, or previous PCT experience
1) CNA license or PCT Training
1) Above-average interpersonal skills with all levels requiring tact and diplomacy
2) Above-average communication and organizational skills
3) Takes initiative in completing tasks
4) Maintains confidentiality of all information
5) Competence in obtaining electrocardiograms
6) Knowledge of medical terminology and computer skills
