Patient Transporter transports patients to and from their inpatient beds and other areas like therapy, surgery or radiology. Other responsibilities include retrieving medical records, lab results, supplies and medications. Being a Patient Transporter may require a high school diploma or its equivalent. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Additionally, Patient Transporter typically reports to a supervisor. The Patient Transporter may require 0-1 year of general work experience. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Under general direction, the Patient Transporter assists infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients from one area of the hospital to another in a safe efficient manner. The Patient Transporter assists in the collection, cleaning and routine maintenance of specific equipment. The Patient Transporter ensures that departments within the hospital have supplies and equipment needed by reallocating as requested and returning equipment to it's department of origin. The Patient Transporter assists with patient care departmental needs to assure that environment is kept neat and orderly, hallways are clear of supplies and equipment and in compliance with regulatory agencies' guidelines.
Essential Functions:
Places pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients’ in wheelchairs/stretchers/beds and transports them from one area of the Hospital to another, taking into consideration the patient’s condition, to ensure safe and efficient patient transportation.
Consults with nurses regarding patients with special problems such as IVs, provision of oxygen during transport, or any other considerations, as required to ensure safe and efficient patient transportation and maintains proper interdepartmental communications.
Requests assistance from nurses to move patients who are in a delicate physical condition or whenever the transporter is unsure of the patient’s ambulatory abilities, to ensure safe patient transportation.
Protects patients with appropriate covers, in order to provide warmth and privacy.
Utilizes Transports Tracking system in an appropriate and efficient manner.
Cleans wheelchair and stretcher upholstery daily, in accordance with department’s infection control policy.
Reports malfunctioning or damaged equipment to supervisor, in order to control the quality of transportation equipment.
Assists with transporting the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient belongings when patient is admitted or to maintain good customer relations.
Documents reasons for transporting delay, as necessary, to collect data for department efficiency and quality assurance.
Checks oxygen tanks on a routine basis and changes tanks as necessary, to ensure adequate supply of oxygen during transport.
Assists with transports of bodies to the morgue and assists morticians with the removal of bodies, following safety precautions.
Education:
High School Diploma/GED required
