Pharmacist compounds and dispenses prescribed drugs per physician's instructions in a hospital or healthcare facility setting. Consults with medical staff about potential drug interactions, patient medical history, and the use of particular medications. Being a Pharmacist responds to questions from patients about medications and dosage instructions. Ensures that all required pharmacy data is recorded and maintained and complies with all regulatory, security and hospital procedures. Additionally, Pharmacist may supervise pharmacy technicians. Requires a doctorate degree in pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Typically reports to a manager. Requires Registered Pharmacist (RPh). Pharmacist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. The perioperative pharmacist provides medication therapy management services which include, but are not limited to, inventory management (including formulary selection); care delivery (including timely medication administration and facilitation of sudden medication needs); medication safety (including proper storage, managing product changes, shortages, recalls); clinical quality and guidance (including clinical protocol development for care processes such as post-operative nausea/vomiting, pain control, antimicrobials, etc.); regulatory compliance; education (including patient/family, clinician); and financial (including medication administration documentation, waste reduction and compliance).

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Education: Graduate of an ACCP accredited school/college of pharmacy is required.

License/Certifications: Eligible or currently licensed in the State of Maine.

Experience: Work experience as a patient care pharmacist involved in patient monitoring and drug therapy review is preferred. Experience in an organized healthcare setting is preferred. Experience in the monitoring and consultation on drug therapy in patients of all age groups.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Analytical skills necessary to identify and resolve problems related to drug therapy.
