Pharmacy Technician Supervisor oversees the work of a team of Pharmacy Technicians that assist Pharmacists with the dispensing of medical prescriptions. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor assists the Manager and/or Lead Pharmacist in providing leadership and management within the assigned department(s). Will supervise pharmacy technician staff within a pharmacy department. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the coordination of the operational activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to personal management to include personnel selection, orientation/training, development/mentoring, performance appraisals, coaching and counseling, disciplinary actions, patient care delivery, quality control and process improvement activities, regulatory compliance, accreditation support, software implementation, and fiscal control. Assists in the development of policies and procedures. In the absence of the Manager/Lead Pharmacist, may assume responsibility and accountability for management of the assigned department(s).
Essential Job Functions
• Works in conjunction with Manager/Lead Pharmacist in various activities involving the daily direct supervision of technician functions.
• Provides leadership within the assigned department(s) in the accomplishment of organizational/departmental goals and objectives. Assist department to meet operational targets and drive growth and efficiency.
• Maintain consistency with the department and establish priorities. Assign workloads and coordinate coverage.
• Performs the functions of interviewing, scheduling and coaching/counseling. Assists Manager/Lead Pharmacist in hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary up to and including discharge as coordinated with the Manager or Director and Human Resources. Responsible for adhering to established human resource management policies and procedures.
• Trains new and existing staff. Develops and maintains training documents and competencies
• Participates in the development of and assists with implementation of an education plan that addresses individual and/or departmental needs. Conducts regular staff meetings and directs the orientation and training of new staff and provides on-going education to staff. Creates an environment in which personnel can realize personal growth and development through active participation in departmental decisions, opportunities for professional growth and consistent application of personnel policies.
• Plans appropriate staffing practices by maximizing the utilization of resources; forecasts and anticipates the personnel needs of department(s) with regard to fluctuations in the workload and productivity standards; maintains staffing at agreed upon budgetary standards.
• Assists Lead Pharmacist/Manager with the development, implementation and maintenance of departmental policies, procedures, job aids and practices to ensure quality of care and a safe environment for patients.
• Organizes ongoing communication between all health care providers regarding aspects of patient care and department(s) functions. Acts to resolve conflicts in a timely manner. Acts as second level authority for complaint resolution and troubleshooting.
• Participates in both short and long term planning for departmental functions and budgetary processes and fiscal control.
• Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency regulations relevant to job performance and ensures staff adherence to the same. Monitors and ensures compliance with quality and regulatory standards. Prevents, minimizes and/or corrects risks to patients. Investigates unusual occurrences and follows appropriate procedure.
• Utilizes process improvement principles to assess and improve the quality of patient care. Develops quality initiatives as appropriate based on patient satisfaction scores, medication error data, employee satisfaction scores, regulatory compliance, and/or other issues as identified.
• Identifies needs and sets goals for own professional growth and development, meets all mandatory system/departmental educational requirements.
• Ensures consistency, efficiency and accuracy in pharmacy technician processes.
