    Job Summary/Basic Function

    · Select section editors and hire (or delegate the hiring of) reporters; photographers; videographers; copy and video editors; graphic and web designers; and any others involved in producing the news and editorial content of the newspaper and website. In so doing, the editor-in-chief (and others delegated the authority to hire) should assure that an Equal Employment Opportunity philosophy is followed.; · Assure that all hires have completed the payroll paperwork prior to providing services to the newspaper and working in conjunction with the student publications business manager to explain pay scales and schedules and to train all hires to complete time sheets.; · Make sure staff turns in completed pay forms and time sheets on deadline; · Instruct, train, offer advice, and provide feedback to the news staff.; · Developing guidelines and job descriptions to manage the newsroom operation. The editor-in-chief requires section editors to set office hours office hours to ensure the newsroom is occupied during business hours.; · Ensure all staff members understand and adhere to standards for professional and ethical behavior.

    Job Duties

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Make final decisions about the acceptability of editorial content in the Indiana Statesman and on www.indianastatesman.com.
    • Establish and communicate to the news staff a news content plan that fully involves covering all aspects of ISU’s campus community.
    • Establish and announce the day and time of weekly assignment meetings where the leadership team will develop a news budget for each issue of the newspaper that will be communicated to the news and photo staffs immediately. Meet with the entire staff at least monthly.
    • Plan stories, photographs, and graphics for publication, and assist senior editors in applying good editorial judgment.
    • Work in conjunction with the student publications director to establish and enforce newsroom production deadlines to deliver finished pages to the printer and ensure a timely posting of the newspaper content online.
    • Ensure that all completed pages are sent to the printer by a final deadline of 11 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday nights and ensure a timely posting of the newspaper content online.
    • Convene an editorial board to determine issues upon which the Statesman should editorialize, and which editorial stands to adopt.
    • Consult with the student advertising manager about the size of each issue of the Statesman.
    • Upon invitation, consult with the student advertising manager concerning matters of taste and legalities that present themselves in advertising material.
    • Respond to questions, suggestions, and complaints from the public.
