Physician Assistant - Medical assesses, plans, and provides patient care under the supervision of a physician. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination. Being a Physician Assistant - Medical orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests. Participates in daily patient rounds, writes progress notes, conducts patient education, writes prescriptions, and prepares discharge summaries. Additionally, Physician Assistant - Medical requires completion of the PANCE exam administered by National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Requires a master's degree of Health Sciences for Physician Assistants or related. Typically reports to a physician. Requires Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Requires State license to practice.     The Medical Assistant will assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction.

    Responsibilities

    Accompany patients to exam / procedure room.

    o Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.

    o Collect patient information / history, taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.

    o Relay instructions to patients / families.

    • Send / receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance. Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
    • Obtain lab / x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
    • Complete forms / requisitions as needed.
    • Prepare and managing charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately.

    o Schedule appointments.

    o Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.

    Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.

    o Clean exam / procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.

    o Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam / procedure rooms.

    • Check schedules and organizing patient flow.
    • Answering calls and providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.
    • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure.

    o Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.

    o Assist physicians with procedures.

    Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.

    Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.

    • Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.
    • Other front office responsibilities, as required.
    • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies / behaviors.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Medical Assistant :

    • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
    • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.

    Medical Assistant, Senior :

    • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

    o OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA)

    o OR at least 1 year of patient care experience required.

    • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category specific tasks.
    • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances :

    Clearances must be dated within 90 days.

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
    • Act 33 with renewal
    • Act 34 with renewal
    • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
