The Center for AI Safety Action Fund (CAIS AF) promotes policies to reduce societal-scale risks from AI at the US federal and state levels.

About the role

As a Policy Generalist, you will refine, operationalize, and advocate for the best ideas from the AI policy community in order to reduce risks from LLMs with extraordinarily hazardous capabilities.

In your first 6 months, you will focus on California policies that help move the needle on safety. You will need to be in person about one week per month.

• Writing explanatory documents related to these policies, such as supporting analysis, press releases, fact sheets, explainers, FAQs, and op eds.
• Working with partners to obtain similar supporting documents.
• Attending meetings to explain and advocate for these policies.
• Reviewing and improving documents written by others along the above lines. 
• Weighing in on potential changes to this set of policies, and potentially working with our lawyers to draft them in order to meet policy objectives.
• [Not required, but great if you can do it] Providing project management to our team and external partners including: (a) ensuring that all action points are crisply stated with clear deadlines and captured in our task management system, and are checked in on when due, and (b) all meetings have clear agendas circulated 24 hours beforehand, and action points circulated afterward.

• Experience in at least one of the following areas (in rough order of preference): California legislature, federal legislature, AI policy, policy writing, law, founding organizations
• Able to hit the ground running when it comes to writing about and explaining our current policy priorities, as demonstrated in work tests and interviews
• Able to write formal prose quickly, as demonstrated in work tests
• Able to get a lot of things done, as demonstrated by track record and reference checks

• Are relentlessly resourceful
• Are comfortable networking, doing cold outreach, building relationships, and representing CAIS AF in meetings with government officials
• Are willing to get nerdy about law and policy, and tend to think precisely
• Are comfortable thinking about comms/perception issues, and making appropriate pragmatic compromises
• Are available and responsive to time sensitive requests
• Get impatient when a project could be moving forward but is not, and spring into action
• Are highly organized and reliable

• $110,000 - 130,000 USD / year, potentially higher for more experienced candidates

• This is a small team that is in its very early stages. We expect that your role will be highly fluid and you will try a variety of projects, in a start-up-like environment. 
• This project is ongoing and we are looking for someone to start as soon as possible. Individual applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
• After the first 6 months, you will work on other aspects of the CAIS policy agenda, which is relatively new and still under development. In general, we expect to work on relatively concrete policy projects that are close to implementation. (We also welcome applications from candidates interested in this as temporary job for the first 6 months.)
