    Position description

The Boots Lab in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist to develop theory on the ecology and evolution of symbiosis/infectious disease. The work will be collaborative within a vibrant group of theoreticians and empirical biologists, with flexibility in both the questions and the approaches that will be used.

There is increasing awareness in the importance of symbiotic relationships - from mutualism through commensalism to parasitism - in the macro and microevolution, population and community dynamics and stability of natural systems. However, generally applicable theory remains critical if we are to develop a fundamental understanding of the interactions between symbiotic organisms and their environments. There is also a need to develop new modeling approaches that include ecological and evolutionary feedbacks across different relative time scales and levels of selection. Successful applicants will aim to develop ecological and evolutionary theory addressing a range of fundamental questions on the evolution of infectious disease, microbiomes and symbiotic interactions more generally.

The Boots lab develops ecological and evolutionary theory and tests the theory in insect-virus model systems in the lab and the field. In addition, we apply ecological and evolutionary theory by building epidemiological models of human tropical disease, specific ecological models of wildlife disease and developing evolutionarily rational disease intervention and control strategies.

The Assistant Project Scientist will develop evolutionary theory focused on an understanding of the evolutionary drivers of microbial symbiosis. Key objectives include the development of new methods that include ecological and evolutionary feedbacks across different relative time scales and levels of selection. These can be addressed by simulation, inference and analytical approaches are needed to address these issues and bring eco-evolutionary theory closer to data. Another objective is to build theory on how symbioses evolve in a community context.

Other key questions involve the role of population structure in the evolution of symbiosis and the impact of multi-level selection in these interactions. Building on this we are aiming to build theory on the evolution of microbiomes. The Assistant Project Scientist will be expected to develop theory that helps to address these questions in general and in specific aquatic systems.

The incumbent will participate in background research, the analysis and interpretation of results; will prepare written and oral summary reports [internal and external]. The incumbent will also help to advise a group of junior researchers, and reporting. The incumbent will attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and will develop and maintain collaborative research relationships; will pursue publication of research in peer-reviewed journals; and may pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals. The ideal candidate is able to develop and troubleshoot new theoretical ideas and is enthusiastic about pursuing exciting and fundamental evolutionary theoretical questions.

This position reports to Professor Michael Boots. The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
