EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. BSN or (demonstrated BSN enrollment required with completion within three years of hire.) All newly hired Registered Nurses must have current BCLS certification or must obtain within one month of hire.
EXPERIENCE
Registered Nurse is the foundational job description for all RNs. All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.
LICENSURE
Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification highly encouraged.

PHYSICAL DEMAND
Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing, and touch. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Will be exposed to physical, mental and emotional illness as well as end of life conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half of the day. Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting. Must be able to assist pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
29 single patient rooms
All rooms have a bathroom, shower, sink, closet (although they are small, it is the only unit outside SD and ICU that has single patient rooms available)
Ratio 1:4-1:5, can staff up to 8 nurses and 3 PCAs on day shift and 7 nurses and 3 PCAs on night shift
High acuity unit where you see everything as an adult medical surgical unit! We see patients with simple diagnoses like the flu all the way up to complex surgical problems, infectious diseases from around the globe, to transition to CMO
We specialize in infectious disease with our own teaching service (Donalson) who specializes in infectious disease processes
We have never had a staff member contract an infectious disease due to the expertise of the staff in following protocols and procedures
We do see a psych population given the single patient rooms, have a lot of support teams to assist with behaviors and services
Can have up to 9 tele patients
It is a difficult unit given the acuity but produces very skilled nurses. (Its like New York! If you can make it here you can make it anywhere!)
Supportive management team who are available to staff 24/7
There is a lot of support for new nurses, new grads, and new to inpatient care
Teamwork is great on the unit, lots of different skill levels. People are happy to help and help people learn and grow
We do have travelers-a lot of them extend their contracts because they like the team that much!
Both managers started their nursing careers on EP 95 and have an understanding of the unit and the challenges and uniqueness of the unit
