    Position description
The Boots Lab in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for up to three Postdoctoral Scholar positions to develop theory on the ecology and evolution of symbiosis/infectious disease. The work will be collaborative within a vibrant group of theoreticians and empirical biologists, with flexibility in both the questions and the approaches that will be used.
There is increasing awareness in the importance of symbiotic relationships - from mutualism through commensalism to parasitism - in the macro and microevolution, population and community dynamics and stability of natural systems. However, generally applicable theory remains critical if we are to develop a fundamental understanding of the interactions between symbiotic organisms and their environments. There is also a need to develop new modeling approaches that include ecological and evolutionary feedbacks across different relative time scales and levels of selection. Successful applicants will aim to develop ecological and evolutionary theory addressing a range of fundamental questions on the evolution of infectious disease, microbiomes and symbiotic interactions more generally.
The Boots lab develops ecological and evolutionary theory and tests the theory in insect-virus model systems in the lab and the field. In addition, we apply ecological and evolutionary theory by building epidemiological models of human tropical disease, specific ecological models of wildlife disease and developing evolutionarily rational disease intervention and control strategies.

Potential research questions and areas include:
The role of symbiotic community structure in diversity and stability of ecosystems - A fundamental question is the relationship between community structure and stability in ecological systems. This is an area where new theory could unite disparate fields and integrate across scales to help shape empirical work and general understanding of microbial community processes and properties.

The role of population structure in the population, community ecology and evolution of symbiotic interactions - Classic ecological and evolutionary theory assumes completely mixed populations despite the range of spatial and social interactions in natural systems.

Levels of selection in symbiotic interactions - The tight interaction between symbiotic organisms leads to selection pressures at multiple levels.

Microbiome interactions as symbioses -There is burgeoning interest in the symbiotic role of microbiomes in human, agricultural and natural systems. Understanding the dynamical ecological and evolutionary structuring and role of microbiome is an important problem.

Coevolution in communities - There is a need to develop coevolutionary theory to the community context in particular to understand the Evolutionary drivers of disease emergence. We currently have a very poor fundamental understanding of the role that evolution plays before and after emergence with much of our theory on the evolution of infectious disease focused on understanding long term outcomes.

The evolution of aquatic symbioses from mutualism to parasitism. There are fundamental differences in the nature of particular ecological characteristics - including population structure - between aquatic and terrestrial systems and therefore a need to expand the general theory of the evolution of symbioses and in particular broaden it to capture key characteristics of aquatic systems.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will define theoretical questions develop appropriate models in collaboration with the PI and the wider lab group. They will take the lead in analysing the models and carrying out simulation to describe theoretical outcomes and in producing manuscripts that report the findings and disseminate the findings through publication and talks. This will involve designing and executing models, data management, data analysis, manuscript preparation, presenting research, contributing to grant proposals, and mentoring students.

The ideal candidate is able to develop and troubleshoot new methodologies and is enthusiastic about pursuing exciting and fundamental biological questions. There will be ample opportunities for collaborating with empirical microbial researchers to develop and execute tests of novel theoretical predictions. There will also be support for further training in theoretical approaches, as needed, and conference travel in order to disseminate results across a broad audience. Finally, the scholar will be encouraged to engage in ongoing DEI efforts in the lab and beyond, and engage in meaningful outreach activities. Professional development will be supported and encouraged, and UC Berkeley offers a range of career advancement workshops and networks.

This position reports to Professor Michael Boots. The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This position provides postdoctoral health and welfare benefits.
