Clinical Nurse 2- Pain Medicine

  • Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse Manager, guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the provider staff, the Clinical Nurse 2 is responsible providing safe, efficient nursing care to patients in the outpatient Center for Pain Medicine Clinic. The Clinical Nurse utilizes the nursing process for patient care assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic clinical care. All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient’s physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs. They consistently project a professional and courteous demeanor. The Clinical Nurse consistently delivers direct patient care to a variety of patient populations including age range of adolescent – geriatric population. They will consistently project a professional and courteous demeanor and shall comply with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards.

    The Clinical Nurse 2 is responsible for assisting the faculty, fellows, and residents in procedure rooms by circulating, administering procedural moderate sedation, and coordinating the care of patients throughout the procedural period (before, during and after each procedure). The nurse will be responsible for initiating and monitoring patients undergoing infusion treatments at the Center for Pain Medicine. The nurse will also be responsible for assisting with the implanted drug delivery system program. These responsibilities may include but are not limited to assisting during pump refills and witnessing or documenting medication administration.

    The clinical nurse provides care for patients with multiple or complex pain management needs. They provide advanced clinical skills in assessing, treating, and evaluating patients with chronic pain. They facilitate an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to the treatment of patients and will assist with patient inquiries in person, via phone, and electronic health record messaging.

    Required Qualifications

    The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health San Francisco campuses
    • Minimum 3 years clinical experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) within the past 3 years
    • Experience starting IVs as a registered nurse
    • Ability to function effectively in emergency situations
    • Ability to wear a lead apron for eight full hours

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience accessing implanted ports
    • Telephone triage experience
    • Experience working with patients with chronic pain conditions
    • Experience with electronic health record documentation
    • Experience providing moderate procedural sedation

    License/Certification

    • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
    • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
    • Active or in progress American Heart Association ACLS Certification
