    Position overview:

    SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division manages one of the world’s premier science facilities on a 400-acre Stanford site with 150 structures for the Department of Energy. We are a service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and infrastructure.

    We are seeking a Pipefitter Specialist Technician to join our Mechanical Utilities Department. Members of this team are responsible for the operation and maintenance of all mechanical infrastructural systems including cooling water systems (LCW, CTW, CHW, & PCHW), underground utilities (storm and sanitary, natural gas, & compressed air piping systems), HVAC systems (offices and laboratory spaces).

    Your specific responsibilities include:

    • Install, repair, maintain and modify various systems, including water treatment plant, water filtration, cooling tower water, and circulation, and domestic water systems and sanitary systems.
    • Install, maintain and modify the instrumentation for these systems, including flow meters, pressure differential meters, and temperature gauges.
    • Install, repair, maintain and modify the piping for water systems, such as low conductivity and de-ionized water systems and pneumatic systems.
    • Ensure the integrity of such systems.
    • Install, modify and maintain fire protection systems including fire mains, building sprinklers, fire hydrants, and halon and deluge systems.
    • Install, modify, and maintain natural gas and processed gas systems including nitrogen, argon, helium, hydrogen, special mixtures, and explosive gases.
    • Flush and purge all systems, including low conductivity water systems, radioactive water systems, and magnet and power-supply cooling systems.
    • Install, maintain and modify water cooling for high voltage power supplies, shunts, chokes, and electrical cables.
    • Order materials needed for various assignments.
    • Work on plastic, galvanized, copper, brass, cast iron, hose, stainless steel, and black iron piping varying in size.
    • Perform brazing, soldering, or some basic welding as needed to connect metal piping materials.
    • Adhere to safety rules.
    • Perform all position welding (down hand and up hand) in a variety of locations, using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes.
    • Cut and fit carbon steel pipe using oxyacetylene (OA) processes.
    • Fabricate pipe supports and other ancillary components.
    • Read and interpret weld symbols.
    • Perform any of the duties described in the Pipefitter specification or other duties as assigned

    To be successful in this position you will bring:

    • High School diploma or vocational curriculum plus five years’ experience plumbing/pipefitting trade. Must have completed a state or federally recognized apprenticeship program or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Practical working knowledge of a broad range of fields and equipment such as mechanics, electronics, electricity, instrumentation, pneumatics, hydraulics, high-pressure gas systems, compressors, pumps, motors, and valves, the ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and heavy equipment. Ability to read and understand Uniform Plumbing Code. Experience in assembling, fabricating installing and supporting various pipe/plumbing systems following engineering sketches, diagrams, and prints.
    • Experience with industrial plumbing fittings and fixtures.
    • Be able to move or install large pipes and work at heights.
    • Work in compliance with building codes and industry standards and various safety procedures.
    • Demonstrated experience in the use of all hand and power tools of the plumbing trade, including the ability to braze and solder copper and brass pipe and fittings
    • Welding experience is a plus, MIG and TIG welding.
    • Must be able to follow written and/or oral instructions.
    • Familiarity with business software programs and applications.
    • Be able to adhere to applicable environmental and safety rules, regulations, and requirements.

    Certifications and Licenses:

    • Valid California non-commercial Class C driver’s license and good driving record

    The expected pay range for this position is $ 50.4 (Step 1) - $ 61.01 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

    This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
