    Position Description:

    Position

    The Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs for a two-year, 9-month (academic year) appointment to begin August 16, 2023 through May 20, 2025.


    Description


    The candidate’s principal responsibilities will be to teach courses in the Higher Education and Student Affairs programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level. Teaching responsibilities will consist of 18 semester hours annually, or a 3-3 load, and may include summer course instruction. Teaching will be delivered primarily in-person or face-to-face, with the potential for some hybrid course delivery (based on applicable University guidelines). The Visiting Assistant Professor will supervise and mentor graduate students in their area of research, serve on dissertation and examination committees, and support students in clinical placements (practica and internships). Additionally, the Visiting Assistant Professor will be expected to participate in program and departmental meetings and assume responsibilities for providing service to the program, department, College, and the institution.

    About the Department and Higher Education & Student Affairs (HESA)


    The Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies (EPLS) at the University of Iowa includes 18 faculty members and serves around 175 students. The department includes three programs: Education Leadership, Education Policy and Leadership Studies (Ed.D.), and Higher Education and Student Affairs. EPLS has an international reputation for advancements in the areas of evaluation and assessment, educational measurement, and effective undergraduate education, among many other research initiatives. The HESA program offers master’s, doctoral (Ph.D. and Ed.D.), and certificate programs to students who serve as educational leaders, scholars, and practitioners in postsecondary institutions and educationally-aligned organizations. The degree programs emphasize experiential learning, through research and teaching assistantships, internships, and practica. HESA program faculty represent diverse philosophies, methods, disciplinary training, and personal backgrounds, ensuring students gain a deep understanding and interconnected view of the field.

    Education Requirement:

    Prospective candidates must have earned a doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in higher education or student affairs administration or related discipline by August 16, 2023.


    Required Qualifications:

    1) Professional and supervisory experience in higher education or student affairs administration; 2) Evidence of scholarly productivity; 3) Teaching experience; 4) Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations; 5) Experience with and capability to teach in two or more of the following areas: students; college outcomes; student affairs; postsecondary teaching and learning; and higher education policy, administration, and governance


    Desirable Qualifications:

    1) Successful experience teaching in higher education settings; 2) Evidence of excellent teaching skills at the undergraduate and graduate level; 3) Experience teaching online or hybrid classes; 4) Preferred 5 years of full-time professional administrative experience working in higher education and/or student affairs; 5) Experience in supervising student affairs professionals and/or higher education graduate students in experiential settings; 6) A record of administrative leadership and collaborating with experiential placement sites.
