Plant Operations Manager oversees the daily operational activities of a plant or production facility. Develops and manages production schedules to meet internal volume, cost, and quality goals. Being a Plant Operations Manager utilizes operational metrics to analyze productivity, identify issues, and set performance targets to achieve production goals. Implements plant safety and security inspections, auditing, and training procedures to meet OSHA and other required regulations. Additionally, Plant Operations Manager oversees staffing and development of all production supervisors and staff and facilitates labor relations. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Plant Operations Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Plant Operations Manager typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Operations Manager is responsible for, but not limited to, directing, and managing all plant sales and operations with overall responsibility for production, maintenance, quality, and personnel. 


    Essential Functions

    • Trains employees on the proper use of equipment and essential job functions.
    • Assures production schedules are being met.
    • Responsible for the safety and housekeeping of the plant.
    • Completes daily production reports and verifies order pricing is correct.

    Requirements

    Competencies (Knowledge)

    • Ability to provide clear instructions and job training to production team members.
    • Communication proficiency both verbal and written.
    • Ability to analyze procedures and implement processes for improvements. 
    • Lead daily production meetings with team leaders and ensure the team’s adherence to the production schedule.
    • Reading, writing, and math skills are essential. 
    • Ability to lead efforts to improve the safety and health of team members, including adherence to OSHA regulations.
    • Maintains existing plant facilities and equipment proactively. Replaces or adjusts plant facilities and equipment when necessary.
    • Establishes and monitors overall plant performance for production and quality standards while maintaining strict process controls, including tank and kettle management.
    • Ensures completed sales orders are booked in a timely fashion, purchase orders are entered and accounted for properly, and all inventories are managed appropriately.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    Serves as the primary direct report for plant office personnel, assistant operations manager, and production supervisors/shift leads.


    Work Environment

    This position works in a manufacturing setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets, and standard warehouse equipment such as forklifts, hand tools, electric tools, and trucks. This position works both inside the plant and outside as required.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop or kneel. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move objects that weigh 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with overtime required as dictated by the workload.

    Opportunities to travel and improve knowledge and learning of the HDG process may arise (<5%).


    Required Education and Experience

    • High school diploma
    • Forklift Certification
    • Previous supervisory experience is a must.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • Word and Excel experience strongly preferred.
    • ERP and payroll system experience preferred.
    • Basic working knowledge of chemistry or metallurgy is a plus.
