Plant Superintendent supervises and coordinates workers' activities in all phases of plant operations. Develops and manages production and maintenance schedules to meet internal volume, cost, and quality goals. Being a Plant Superintendent utilizes operational metrics to analyze productivity, identify issues, and achieve production goals. Troubleshoots operational, materials, equipment, and staffing problems and coordinates solutions. Additionally, Plant Superintendent implements plant safety and security inspections, auditing, and training procedures to meet OSHA and other required regulations. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Plant Superintendent manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Plant Superintendent typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Primary Role

    The successful candidate shall perform those duties necessary to maintain and ensure reliable operation of all water supply, treatment, pumping and storage facilities of the IAWC Champaign Division.

    Key Accountabilities

    • Maintenance and installation of SCADA-related equipment, controls and instruments including, but not limited to well Equipment, various pumps, chemical feed equipment (lime, carbon dioxide, sodium hypochlorite, fluoride, etc.), basin equipment, filters, standby power equipment, electrical equipment, and control equipment. 
    • Equipment work will include taking readings, rebuilding, lubrication, calibration, replacing components, overhauling, cleaning, testing, fueling, trouble shooting, wiring and other duties as assigned by management. 
    • Other duties may include general building construction including:
      • carpentry, concrete work, roofing, and painting
      • plumbing
      • both acetylene and electric welding, soldering, brazing and cutting
      • machining and metal fabrication
    • Some travel throughout the Illinois-American Water Company Champaign District service area may be required. 
    • The position is a day shift position and requires inclusion in the on-call rotation.

    Knowledge/Skills

    • Strong work ethic, communication, time management, safety consciousness, as well as organizational and team membership skills. 
    • Mechanical aptitude, including the ability/knowledge to do electrically based repairs on all equipment. Must be able to work under variable weather, temperature, noise, and atmospheric conditions, as well as heights and around moving machinery. 
    • Must be courteous with internal and external contacts, as well as be able to take direction while working with a Senior Plant Mechanic. 
    • Must be available for after-hours work and other emergencies as well as performing other unlisted duties as required by supervision. 
    • Basic computer data entry skills required with Programmable Logical Controllers (PLC) programming skills desired. 

    Experience/Education

    • High school degree, or equivalent, required.

    Certification & Licenses

    • Valid Class C Non-CDL Driver’s License with clean MVR, or ability to obtain the Class C within 6 months of hire date. 
    • Class A Water Operators License ideal but not required, or have the ability to obtain.
