Plant Superintendent supervises and coordinates workers' activities in all phases of plant operations. Develops and manages production and maintenance schedules to meet internal volume, cost, and quality goals. Being a Plant Superintendent utilizes operational metrics to analyze productivity, identify issues, and achieve production goals. Troubleshoots operational, materials, equipment, and staffing problems and coordinates solutions. Additionally, Plant Superintendent implements plant safety and security inspections, auditing, and training procedures to meet OSHA and other required regulations. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Plant Superintendent manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. The City of Lansing is seeking to fill the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent position in one of the largest wastewater facilities in Michigan that is run with state-of-the art technology. IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING
A four year college degree including at least 9 semester hour credits from each of the three specified educational categories (see definitions). These credits must be divided between at least 3 courses in different subject areas from each of the three general categories. (For example: General Chemistry 101, 102, and 103 would be considered one subject area, but General Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Analytical Chemistry would be considered three subject areas in the Science category; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Five (5) years of acceptable operational experience in a Class B or higher treatment facility,
Two (2) years of which shall have been in an acceptable supervisory position or a position of major operational responsibility (MOR). The operational experience shall include at least three months (or accumulated 480 hours) in the area of secondary treatment and at least three months (or accumulated 480 hours) in each of at least two other specified areas of operational experience.
Must have MI Class A Sewage Plant Operation Certification. Transcripts verifying coursework and copy of license must be submitted by the application deadline. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
Serves as primary contact for all personnel related management functions. Performs a wide range of personnel management functions including evaluating employees, interviewing job applicants, and discussing personnel issues with Plant Superintendent involving promotion, reassignment, discipline, and termination of employees.
Receives and responds to complaints by citizens and regulatory agencies.
Monitors division’s operations and directs changes when necessary.
Reviews maintenance activities and sets priorities.
Conducts and supervises tests and projects related to wastewater plant operations.
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and monitors budget expenditures.
