Plumber inspects, repairs, installs, modifies, and maintains plumbing fixtures and piping in heating, water and drainage systems. Identifies plumbing and safety problems applicable to the installation and takes necessary corrective action using appropriate parts and tools. Being a Plumber complies with all required safety, building code and inspection requirements. Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, and other instructions. Additionally, Plumber has completed required apprenticeship. Typically requires a high school diploma. Requires Journeyman Plumber status. Requires a State License for plumbing. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Plumber works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Responsible for maintenance and renovation of plumbing systems for Lubbock County. Work includes preventive and emergency maintenance as well as repairs and upgrades. Must be a self-starter and have service tech, construction, and remodeling experience. Must be comfortable working in small spaces and in detention center environments. Must be able to perform administrative duties on a computer. Support the department’s maintenance, life safety, and mechanical technicians when needed.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High school graduation or its equivalent, trade school, and/or construction trades, plus at least 6 years minimum experience; and/or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties listed above. Must have at least an active TX Journeyman’s Plumbing License. Must be certified to perform inspections on backflow preventers or willing to become certified within first year of employment. Must have valid Texas Driver’s License. Any other certifications are a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge and ability to perform connection of systems, including using solder, glue, pro-press, and shark-bite applications. General construction rough-ins and service maintenance knowledge and skills and ability to follow county policies and procedures. Experience and understanding in the safe operation of equipment and tools. Troubleshoot building or equipment breakdowns with available resources and having little to no supervision. Apply safety standards to prevent hazards. Organize and prioritize tasks to be assigned and completed. Interpret drawings and specifications for county building and renovation projects. Perform mathematical calculations and use a computer efficiently. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Work professionally and cooperatively with co-workers.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods of time; use hands to finger motion, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently bend, stoop, lie down, and walk. The employee may be required to work in some extremely small pipe chases and attic crawl spaces. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds, such as tools and equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, ability to focus, and perceive color. Vision may be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Employee will be required to work in small areas, office buildings, and warehouses with standard incandescent and fluorescent lighting, to handle and properly dispose of hazardous chemicals, and work in areas of loud noise. Employee must be able to tolerate outside conditions, including exposure to extreme weather conditions.
