Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Responsibilities: Patrol is considered to be a primary law enforcement function and embraces much more than the act of uniformed officers making regular and reported rounds while inspecting and guarding the village/town. Patrol is a generalized police function in which officers engage in a wide variety of law enforcement, public safety and public order maintenance activities. Officers shall be responsible for the following major activities: Preventive Patrol, Response to call for service, Crime Prevention, Investigation of offenses, Traffic accident investigation, Traffic Enforcement Maintenance of public order, Enforce Village/Town ordinance and Wisconsin State Statues criminal and traffic laws.
Education Requirements: High school diploma, 60 college credits/ Associate’s degree

Elgibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification
