Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision.     The University of Maine at Farmington is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer. This classification is responsible for performing skilled police work to protect life and property; and enforce University regulations and Federal, State, and local laws. Essential duties require a working knowledge of police standards, procedures, techniques, and systems. Incumbents must utilize independent judgment in critical situations to maintain safety.


    This is a full-time, regular 12-month position. This position pays a range of $22.73 - $30.88 per hour (based on experience and Maine Criminal Justice Academy BLETP Certification)


    Essential Functions:

    • Respond to routine and complex emergencies; answer and respond to radio or telephone dispatches.
    • Communicates with the faculty, staff, students, and general public while patrolling the University streets.
    • Assists individuals with disabled vehicles and vehicle lockouts; checks building security; and observes the behavior of citizens.
    • Controls vehicle and pedestrian traffic to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, which includes directing traffic and issuing citations for moving and/or parking violations.
    • Prepares suspect illness and injury, accident, arrest, and administrative reports.
    • Enforces vehicle and traffic laws, which include checking speed with radar and making traffic stops.
    • Performs specialized activities such as training new recruits, investigating crimes, and/or coordinating projects.
    • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

    Qualifications:

    Required Competencies:

    • Interpersonal skills: Strong ability in written and oral expression
    • Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of community policing. Demonstrated ability to analyze emergency and non-emergency situations and develop effective courses of action
    • Technology: Strong technology skills in the use of a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), Information Management Corporation's Record System (IMC), alarm access control and monitoring systems as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, EXCEL, ACCESS, PowerPoint); Demonstrated commitment to the mission of providing law enforcement and security services in a multi-cultural community that recognizes, values and utilizes the individual differences and contributions of all people.

    Required:

    • High School Diploma
    • Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) Pre-Service Course Phase III
    • Valid driver's license (in good standing based on UMS standards)
    • Must be located within 45 miles of the UMF campus

    Preferred:

    • Graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP) or out-of-state equivalent MCJA Waiver

    Top qualified candidates chosen will be required:

    • Complete a written scenario
    • Complete an oral board interview
    • Attend an addditional on-campus visit with the Vice President of Student Affairs, Director of Public Safety and a third university administrator
