Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision.     Qualifications :

    • Applicants must be between 20 and 34 years of age, age limitations do not apply to any person who has been previously employed as a full-time Police Officer.
    • Veterans can exceed the maximum age requirements by the number of years served on active duty, but no more than 10 years (please submit Military DD214).
    • Applicants must possess a High School Diploma or a GED certificate. A copy should be submitted with application.
    • Applicant must qualify medically, possess a valid driver's license and must be of good moral character. Upon appointment the applicant must serve a one (1) year probationary period.
    • The selection process to establish the Eligibility List will include application review and acceptance by the Board of Fire & Police Commissioners, a Physical Agility Test, Written Examination Background Investigation and Oral Interview.
    • Lateral Applicants must pass the Physical Agility Test, Background Investigation and Oral Interview.
    • Must be certified as a Police Officer in the State of Illinois or eligible for a waiver of certification.
    • Laterals may be given up to fifteen (15) years of service credit.

    Salary Details :

    • Salary starts at $22.44 / hour, advances to $25.09 / hour post field training and will be $27.42 / hour at completion of year one.
    • A sign-on bonus of $4,200 is available for New Hires and a sign-on bonus of up to $9,400 for Lateral Hires.

    • Participation in Downstate Pension Fund (Defined Benefit Plan).
    • Paid Holidays (12) with bonus when worked. Vacation Days, Personal Days, Sick Time and the ability to accumulate Comp Time.
