    CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

    SUMMARY:

    Responsible for law enforcement of all tribal laws and regulations including land and marine areas, which are under tribal jurisdiction. Collects evidence, interviews witnesses and testifies in court. Assists in all MNPD activities, ensuring that public order and safety is maintained throughout the Meskwaki community by enforcing laws and ordinances, taking all necessary measures to prevent crime and protect lives and property.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide law enforcement services to the tribal community, co-workers and public in a tactical, ethical, pleasant and courteous manner.
    • Patrol settlement community to control traffic, prevent crime and disturbances of the peace, and to arrest violators and wanted persons.
    • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls and complaints involving fires, traffic situations, robberies, disturbances, public safety and other law enforcement issues, and provide appropriate law enforcement action(s).
    • Collect, secure, examine, process and analyze evidence.
    • Photograph and/or record video footage of crime scenes and evidence.
    • Collect and protect data, evidence and specimens.
    • Interview informants, suspects, and witnesses to ascertain alibis, clues, time frames and possible suspects, and follows-up on leads.
    • Ensure legal compliance by obtaining subpoenas, search warrants, arrest warrants, and obtaining signed statements and affidavits.
    • Record detailed progress of investigations and prepare investigative reports.
    • File paperwork, record detailed data and prepare investigative reports.
    • Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants.
    • Provide testimony as a witness in court.
    • Cooperate with tribal, local, state, and federal law enforcement officials in the investigation, apprehension and detention of wanted persons, and with other agencies where activities of the MNPD are involved, as directed or approved by the Narcotics and Taskforce Coordinator or the Chief of Police.
    • Attend conferences, conventions, seminars, meetings and trainings, as directed or approved by the Chief of Police.
    • Provide assistance to MNPD Police Officers, Investigators, Detectives and Dispatchers in crime scene situations, as needed or directed by the Chief of Police.
    • Participate on special task forces assigned by supervisory staff, which may include school resource officer duties, such as student, staff and community education and training.
    • Perform related duties and responsibilities, as outlined in the Meskwaki Nation Police Department Policies and Procedures Operations Manual.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality.

    REQUIREMENTS:


    • Must be at least 21 years of age.
    • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
    • Must have 20/20 vision or corrected 20/20 vision.
    • Must be currently Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certified as a Police Officer with no breaks in employment; OR must meet the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy requirements and be able to successfully complete the pre and post Iowa Law Enforcement Academy requirements and become a Certified Police Officer in the State of Iowa within one year of hire.
    • Must possess a thorough knowledge of police administration and management principles and practices, including optimum use of human and material resources.
    • Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of the MNPD Policies and Procedures.
    • Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of Tribal Sovereignty, and applicable local, state and federal laws, statutes and ordinances.
    • Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of the codes, laws, statutes and ordinances of the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa.
    • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful and professional working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, supervisor(s), officials, community members and the general public.
    • Must have the ability to analyze complex problems and determine valid, effective and efficient resolutions.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa State Driver's License, and be eligible for the Tribe's vehicle insurance. All license infractions/moving violations incurred during employment must be reported to the Human Resources Department immediately.
    • Must submit to and successfully pass an extensive criminal background investigation and receive Adjudication Certification. Mandated Regulations:

      6. Executive Order 12968 Adjudication Standards
    • Must maintain suitability for the position, as background checks and adjudication will be performed periodically. All civil judgements and criminal charges incurred during employment must be reported to the Human Resources Department immediately.
    • Must be bondable under the Tribe's Fidelity Bonding Policy during the course of employment with the Tribe.
    • Must be able and willing to talk, listen, sit, stand, walk, run, drive, kneel, crawl and reach with hands or arms.
    • Must be able to physically lift or move up to 50lbs.
    • Must be able and willing to work in indoor and outdoor conditions, including occasional exposure to wet & humid conditions, toxic & caustic chemicals and extreme heat & cold temperatures.
    • Must be able to perform duties in stressful, volatile situations.
    • Must be available for emergency law enforcement duties at any time.
    • Must establish residency within a thirty-minute emergency response time radius, within six months of hire date.
    • Must successfully complete a one-year probationary period.

    SUPERVISION:

    • Supervised by the Chief of Police

    SALARY:

    • Non-Certified Police Officer starting at $26.25 per hour
    • Iowa Certified Police Officer starting at $29.93 - $34.65 per hour (depending on years of service) plus $5000 sign on bonus
