Police Sergeant jobs in Columbus, OH

Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • Under the direction of the Chief of Public Safety, the Sergeant assists with the overall supervision of the department. Provides a safe and secure environment for the University Community and all of its members. Takes a lead role in responding to major incidents on campus affecting the interests of the University or the department. Provides a variety of services which enhance the quality of life on campus, maintain satisfactory working relationships with peers, supervisors, students, faculty, staff, local police and the general public.


    Responsibilities:

    • Enforces State, Local and University rules and regulations.
    • Assists with the overall supervision of the department.
    • Takes a lead role in responding to major incident reports.
    • Participates in the professional development of the University and the department.

    Qualifications:

    • Knowledge and skills at a level normally acquired through the completion of a high school education or equivalency.
    • Minimum of five years prior experience in law enforcement required, or three years and an associate degree in criminal justice.
    • Possess an Ohio Police Commission or the ability to obtain certification within three months of hire.
    • Valid Ohio motor vehicle operator's license. Current driver's license record must not reflect six points or more.
    • Excellent professional communication skills (verbal and written).
    • This position may expect irregular working hours and days off, including weekends and holidays.
