Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Job Summary/Basic Function:
    Guide, lead and direct a squad or shift of campus security personnel.
    Perform in a professional manner campus security work to protect life and property, and maintain order within a community college setting.
    • Assign duties, train, and lead campus security officers
    • Assist with evaluating performance to determine training requirements and deficiencies
    • Assist in developing and conducting training programs for campus security
    • Investigate complaints of disturbance, accidents, stolen property or criminal activity
    • Patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot or by vehicle to maintain security
    • Issue citations for violations of campus regulations
    • Assist in department scheduling
    • Perform related duties as assigned.
    • Perform uniformed security officer work on assigned shifts.
    • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills while interacting with students, staff, and campus visitors.
    • Maintain confidentiality of information.
    • Use basic computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, internet searches, databases, and email.
    • Write reports covering the activity of the assigned shift or squad; review and correct reports of other officers. Complete required written reports accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Work effectively with fellow employees, faculty, staff, students, general public and other diverse groups.
    • Work effectively with other government agencies such as police and fire departments.
    • Properly use and train others to use two-way radios, cell phones, pagers, alarm systems and other similar devices.
    • Properly use and train others to use fire suppression techniques and equipment such as fire extinguishers.
    • Learn and train others in correct patrol, traffic, parking enforcement and investigative procedures.
    • Use multicultural experience and/or background to contribute to the cultural richness and diversity of Everett Community College.
    • Perform related duties as required.
    • Assist the Director with department related administrative tasks.



    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School diploma/GED or higher qualification
    • Two or more years of work experience as campus security officer, campus police or equivalent
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills
    • Basic to intermediate level computer skills for accessing data and writing reports.
    • Possession of a valid drivers license and acceptable driving record
    • Ability to work shift assignments as required by the department, which may include holidays and weekends
    • Current certification in in First Aid, CPR and AED
    • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods and techniques in security or law enforcement
    • Ability to use independent judgment and maintain confidentiality
    • Strong and exceptional customer service skills, interpersonal and communication skills
    • Basic to intermediate level computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with populations representing diverse backgrounds, life experiences and abilities



    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Associate degree in a related field
    • Certification or training in specific security and/or law enforcement techniques (e.g., radio, pepper spray, de-escalation techniques)

    Work Hours: Full time, year round position. 4:00 pm to 12:00 am, Monday through Friday.
    When assigned to night shift, additional pay is $2.50 per hour ($435 per month).
