Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Primary job function and duties:
The person in this position will react decisively and quickly in response to emergency and non-emergency calls received continuously in the Emergency Communications Division. This individual will be responsible for responding to public inquiries, requests for emergency services, and creating and maintaining records. Work is performed in a confined space; sitting at a computer terminal using state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment. Emphasis placed on customer service. Must have excellent hearing in both ears, clear speech, effective verbal skills, and be able to type quickly and accurately on a computer keyboard. Due to the nature and requirements of this position, extensive testing and background investigations are necessary prior to selection. The entire applicant hiring and training process can require several months to complete. Applicants must pass a preliminary screening that tests Error Recognition, Information Identification, Categorizing Information and Information Recall. Applicants must pass a panel interview. They must also pass Criminal Background Investigation. Applicants are also required to participate in 8 hours of on-site observation. After selection, the candidate will need to submit to fingerprinting. After being hired, Telecommunications Specialists are required to attain the following certifications during in-house training: NC SBI-DCI Certification, IS-100, IS-700 and CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment.
