Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Responsibilities:
    The officer is responsible for protecting life and property utilizing effective crime prevention techniques, and apprehending criminals. The officer will enforce university, state, and applicable federal laws, regulations, and policies. The officer may be assigned to traffic and crowd control as well as securing buildings after business operations have ceased. The officer must be able to act soundly without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in dealing with emergency situations.

    Qualifications:
    Must be physically fit and be able to walk, run, climb, and crawl to the extent prescribed by the Board on Law Enforcement Standards and Training. Candidate must have good verbal communication as well as written communication skills. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle including a car, truck, golf cart, ATV, bicycle, or other all-terrain vehicles. The candidate must be a board-certified police officer.High School Diploma or GED.
    Applicants must be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer through P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standard and Training) or currently in the Academy.
    Must have a valid Mississippi Drivers License.Prior Campus Law Enforcement Experience
    Sixty hours of College coursework, an Associates Degree or an undergraduate degree in a related field is preferred.

    Salary:
    HourlyCommensurate with experience and qualifications
