Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Essential Duties:

    • Supervise, protect, instruct, train, counsel and evaluate assigned employees.
    • Provide for the care, custody, and adherence to rules and regulations of detainees assigned to specific work area.
    • Supervise and provide custody and security of detainees including observation of detainees and detainees assigned to work duty which includes long periods of sitting and standing.
    • Supervise and direct searches for contraband including ‘pat’ and ‘strip’ searches, by squatting and bending to perform such functions.
    • Transfer and transport detainees by walking or riding in vehicles; restrain and secure assaultive detainees as needed.
    • Read, review, and properly apply information found in detainee records which is related to the detainee’s health and safety and to the security of the facility; provide appropriate information to other personnel.
    • Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms, and reports.
    • Perform specific duties if assigned to the following areas: housing unit, administration segregation and intake.

    Qualifications:

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED).
    • Two (2) years’ correctional custody or law enforcement experience required.
    • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
    • Must successfully complete required pre-service training.
    • A valid driver’s license in the state of New Mexico or Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
    • Must successfully complete all annual in-service requirements and maintain appropriate facility clearance.
