Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. High School graduate or equivalent with a minimum of six (6) years training in land mobile radio or related fields. Training received from academic institutions, equipment manufacturers, the military or employer provided on-the-job training will be accepted.
Demonstrate knowledge of Radio Frequency equipment by two (2) years relevant employment experience in maintaining, testing, configuring and installation of land mobile radio communications equipment.
An Associate's Degree in electrical technology or a related field may substitute for two years of experience. A Bachelor's Degree in electrical technology or a related field may substitute for four years of experience.
Preference will be given to candidates with a valid New York State Driver's License and who can lift and carry 50 pounds.
Provide technical support on any emergency or drill, performing on-scene setup of any or all technical systems aboard any Emergency Command Vehicle or other temporary communications facility.
Responsible for scheduled and non-scheduled general maintenance on the Emergency Command Vehicles and all associated equipment.
Maintain, repair, test, configure and install all fixed, mobile, or portable components of land mobile radio communications equipment. Must be able to perform land mobile radio performance evaluations statewide and operate essential test equipment for all related equipment.
Maintain liaison with outside vendors for preventative maintenance and repair services and report any deviations from the contracts.
Travel throughout New York State will be necessary for training, special events or to provide command post support.
Perform such other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Starting Salary: $63,108.00.
