Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. An example of an exercise candidates may partake in is: Critical Incident�- this type of exercise is designed to assess one's ability and readiness to take command of and run an emergency scene or tactical situation.     PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of State Police, this class is accountable for serving as Commander of a State Police Troop, overseeing activities of a specialized section of a major division or serving as Commander of a district within the Statewide Narcotics Task Force Section.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Supervises the overall activities of a troop, specialized section or district within the Statewide Narcotics Task Force Section with responsibility for effective implementation of all operations; conducts continuous appraisal of operations and recommends or institutes corrective action as warranted; schedules and oversees effective assignment and utilization of personnel, equipment or facilities; assumes command of crime or major accident scenes or incidents involving police personnel, oversees investigation activities as required; oversees continuing in-service training and development of personnel; promotes and maintains effective public relations with news media, public officials and the general public; oversees and supervises recordkeeping and administrative management activities of command; performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws, statutes, regulations and court decisions; considerable knowledge of principles of modern police administration; considerable ability to accurately evaluate situations and make effective administrative and supervisory decisions; knowledge of modern police investigative techniques, procedures and aids; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; leadership and supervisory ability.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    One (1) year of experience as a State Police Sergeant.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class must possess sufficient strength, stamina, agility and endurance to perform all the duties of the class.
