Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions.     There are 7 elements that must be satisfied for hiring consideration. Each element must be met fully to reach the next phase of testing.

    Failure to meet any of the criteria required will result in elimination from the process. Each phase of the process is competitive, with only the highest averaged scores moving forward after each phase.

    Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license at time of appointment;Be at least 18 years old; but less than 35 years old at time of appointmentAnd, have obtained an A.

    A.S degree AND have prior police related experience; Or, a Bachelors of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university;

    Or, an Honorable Discharge from one of the branches of the United States Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines or Coast Guard) after serving two (2) or more years of active duty AND having obtained 30 or more credits toward a degree from an accredited college or university.

    WRITTEN TEST : The written test is limited to one hundred and fifty (150) applicants. The test site is Pascack Hills High School 225 West Grand Ave.

    Montvale, N.J. 07645 in the cafeteria. The test will be administered and proctored by the New Jersey State Police Chiefs Association on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

    The doors open at 5 : 30 p.m. and the test begins promptly at 6 : 00 p.m. All applicants will park in the front parking lot of Pascack Hills High School.

    Applicants who arrive late will be disqualified from the process. Cell phones and any other electronic devices are prohibited in the test site.

    Be sure to list an accurate email address on the test registration.PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM : The Physical Agility Exam will be scheduled on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Golz Chiropractic Center, 794 Franklin Ave.

    Suite #204, Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417. Testing will begin promptly at 7 AM-those who arrive late will be immediately disqualified from any further participation in the process.

    You must bring a doctor’s note dated within 30 days of the physical agility exam certifying that you are medically fit to take the above test.

    Failure to produce the doctor’s note will result in elimination from the process. The doctor’s note will be collected at the beginning of the physical.

    The top sixteen (16) averaged scores from the physical and written exam will move on to the full application phase of the process.

    Those moving on will be notified by phone or email. Those who do not move on will be notified by email.Those moving on will be notified to pick up the full Montvale Police Application on Tuesday, May 21, or Wednesday, May 22, 2024 between 9 : 00 a.

    m. and 4 : 00 p.m. at Montvale Police HQ, 12 Depiero Drive Montvale, N.J. 07645. Applicants who are late will be eliminated from the process.

    Fully completed applications are due back to the Montvale Police Department no later than 4 : 00 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2024.

    Interviews will be held at the Montvale Police Department 12 Depiero Drive Montvale, N.J. 07645.The top eight (8) applicants will move on to the background check portion of the process and will be notified by phone and email.

    Those who are not selected to continue will be notified by email and / or U.S. mail.Background investigations for the top eight (8) remaining candidates begin immediately following the interviews.

    Candidates will comply with all requests by their assigned investigator or be disqualified from the process. If a candidate from the top eight is eliminated due to an unsatisfactory background check, the next eligible candidate on the list will move into the final group for background investigation.

    The semi-finalists will be scheduled for an interview with the Montvale Mayor and Council. The finalists will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment pending the successful outcome of a psychological examination, a Health and Occupational Safety exam and the Bergen County Police Academy Physical Screening.

    The finalists will be scheduled for a psychological examination and a Health and Occupational Safety exam during the week following the Mayor and Council interview.

    In the event that a finalist is disqualified as a result of the psychological or the Health and Occupational Safety examinations, the next eligible candidate will be scheduled for the above testing.

    The candidate will also be required to pass the Bergen County Police Academy Pre-Assessment Physical.The selected candidate will be sworn in at a Council meeting at the Borough of Montvale in June.
