Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position: Corrections Sergeant
    Salary Range: $5,797.65/mo. to $6,712.11/mo.
    Location: Corrections Department

    Duties: Working under the direction of the Jail Commander, Correctional Sergeants provide oversight and direction to Correctional Officers in all functional areas of the Walla Walla County Correctional Facility.
    Qualifications: To be eligible for promotion, an employee must have successfully served through his/her probationary period, be a current employee of the Walla Walla County Corrections Department and have at least one (1) years of experience as a Correctional Officer with Walla Walla County. Candidates should be familiar with all functional areas of the Walla Walla County Corrections Facility.

    Exam Process: A written exam is required with testing on Wednesday, February 7th, 2024, at 2pm in the Training Room located at 314 W. Main St. room 214, second floor.
    Two Hours to complete 100 questions that are multiple choice
    -Section A - [Book] Managing Police Organizations – Paul Whisenand, 7th Edition, Chapters 1-5 (all materials can be checked out from Keri Weber after your application is turned into HR)
    -Section B - Inmate Behavior Management – The Key to a Safe and Secure Jail (NIC document)
    -Section C - Inmate Behavior Management – Guide to Meeting Basic Needs (NIC document), Chapters 1-4
    -Section D - RCW 10.79.080, 10.79.090, 10.79.100, 70.48.020 (Definitions), 70.48.130, 70.48.490, and 70.48.500
    -Section E - Walla Walla County Corrections Department Custody Manual (Lexipol), Sections 105; 108; 109; 212; 312; 400; 511; 512; 516; 717; and Preface – Organizational Expectations (available online from Lexipol at your County Workstation and via Lexipol mobile app).

    Panel interviews will take place the following week for the candidates who pass the written exam.
