Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position Summary:

    Reports to the designated lieutenant. Directly supervises assigned correctional officers. Responsible for the custody and discipline of inmates in the facility in compliance with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, Management & Training Corporation (MTC), Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) and Florida Department of Management Services (DMS) directives.

    Essential Functions:

    • Supervise, protect, instruct, train, counsel and evaluate assigned employees.
    • Provide for the care, custody, and adherence to rules and regulations of inmates assigned to specific work area.
    • Supervise and provide custody and security of inmates including observation of inmates and inmates assigned to work duty which includes climbing stairs, long periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
    • Supervise and direct searches for contraband including ‘pat’ and ‘strip’ searches, by squatting and bending to perform such functions.
    • Transfer and transport inmates by walking or riding in vehicles. Restrain and secure assaultive inmates as needed.
    • Read, review and properly apply information found in inmate records which is related to the inmates' health and safety and to the security of the facility. Provide appropriate information to other personnel.
    • Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms and reports.
    • Perform specific duties if assigned to the following areas: housing unit, education, intake and segregation or other areas as assigned.
    • Respond to emergencies to search for inmates, hearing calls and calling for help, administer first aid at the emergency site, carry an injured or unconscious inmate, and use force, including the use of chemical agents and firearms in accordance with company policies and agency regulations.
    • Comply with policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

    It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

    Education and Experience Requirements:

    High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years’ experience in an adult correctional environment or related field required. Prior supervisory experience preferred. A valid driver's license in the state of Florida with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

    Post Hire Requirements:

    Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements.
